Contributions

In addition to the books I’ve written, I’ve made contributions (either forewords or chapters) for a number of other books, listed here.  All of the books on this page can be purchased from Amazon.com by clicking on the pictures.

Application Architecture for WebSphere: A Practical Approach to Building WebSphere Applications

When Joey Bernal approached me and said that he was looking at writing a book on WebSphere Application Architecture and wanted to know if I would review it, I did, and was so impressed with the outstanding result that I then offered to write a foreword for him.

IBM WebSphere DataPower SOA Appliance Handbook

This book was written by a bunch of my colleagues in the ISSW consulting team for DataPower, and I was pleased to be asked to write one of three forwords for the book, along with Jerry Cuomo and Eugene Kuznetsov.

Java Testing Patterns

I wrote two short chapters on patterns for testing database access layers for this book. One of them is an interesting second look at mock objects that is an expansion of an idea I’d previously written about in an article.

IBM WebSphere: Deployment and Advanced Configuration

This book was written by several of my team members, Tom Alcott, Roland Barcia, Keys Botzum and Bill Hines and delves into how teams should deploy applications to the WebSphere platform and how applications can be optimally configured for WebSphere 5.0 and 5.X. I had been involved in the early planning for this book, as it originally came out of a possible revision idea to my EJB workbook by Roland, so when the authors graciously asked me to write the forward for their book, I gladly accepted. It’s a very useful book for system administrators and everyone else involved in deploying WebSphere applications.

Software Configuration Management Patterns: Effective Teamwork, Practical Integration

Steve Berczuk asked me to write the foreword for his book on patterns of Software configuration management.  I highly recommend this book -- I’ve found the advice absolutely invaluable.

Performance Analysis for Java Websites

Two of my team members, Stacy Joines and Ken Hygh, along with Ruth Willenborg from the WebSphere performance team asked me to write the foreword on their book on performance in Java Web Sites. I also very highly recommend this book -- if you have ANYTHING to do with developing web sites with Java you need a copy of this book at hand.

IT Web Services: A Roadmap for the Enterprise

Alex Ngheim, a friend of mine from Atlanta, asked me to contribute to this book on Web Services.  I wrote the chapter on Web Services security and scalability. The book is a high-level guide for managers to Web Services.

Mastering XMI: Java Programming with the XMI, XML, and UML

This book (by a number of IBM developers, including Steve Brodsky, who’s one of the leads for the Eclipse Modeling Framework) on XMI included an chapter that was derived from one of my WebSphere Developer’s Domain articles.

Pattern Languages of Program Design 2

The second PLoPD book (which is more or less the proceedings of the 1996 Pattern Languages of Programs Conference) contained the first version of the Crossing Chasms object-relational mapping patterns from Bruce Whitenack and myself.
